The Valley bears host to an absolute firecracker of a fixture in the early championship season: Charlton Athletic vs Leeds United.
Both teams come into the game with the aim to claim all three points come the final whistle. Unfortunately for the Addick’s, our Charlton vs Leeds predictions are favouring victory for the visitors.
Indeed, with Marcelo Bielsa’s men currently sitting in a strong position in the league, eyeing promotion this season – which you can read up on in our 2019/20 Championship season preview – there’s only one way this game will end: another win for the Whites.
Not to say that it won’t be a tough fixture. Historically, Leeds have not done well in this clash. The Valley has not been a happy hunting ground.
Which gives even more precedence to our forecast of a hard-fought win. After all, would it really be Leeds if they didn’t make us sweat?
Charlton vs Leeds Predictions
Yes, Leeds are expected to win this clash. Yet last weekend’s 1-1 draw against Derby provides some caveats.
Indeed, the first-half performance from the Whites was Bielsa through and through. Dominant, intense, unrelenting. From defence to attack, Leeds were unplayable. The only thing that evaded them was a goal, and that too was to come courtesy of Max Lowe’s penalty-box panic.
However, everything changed in the second half. Patrick Bamford’s inspired performance led to a penalty for Bielsa’s men. Had Mateusz Klich put that in the back of the net, the game would have well and truly been put to bed. Alas, it was not meant to be, and that’s exactly what our Charlton vs Leeds predictions are banking on recurring this weekend.
For all of Bamford’s chances, Derby’s defensive disarray, and a full house at Elland Road cheering them on, the Whites were only able to come away with a point.
In previous seasons, a point against Derby would’ve been a result that most teams would be content with. But a poor Rams side who scored with their only shot on goal should have been easy pickings for the hosts.
The truth is that the underlying problems that plagued Leeds last season are coming to the forefront again.
A lack of clinical finishing and converting chances cost them promotion in last year’s campaign. There is evidence to suggest the same issues are cropping up again.
But as mentioned, Leeds possess a get-out-of-jail card like no other in Bamford.
The 26-year-old was excellent for his team last weekend. Not only did he win the missed penalty, but was denied by the woodwork and Kelle Roos. Such a performance should’ve warranted a goal. But Bamford won’t be making the same mistakes this weekend. Even if Charlton make it a tough encounter for the Leeds forward.
Which is exactly what Lee Bowyer and his men will be trying to carry out. Sure, the Addick’s were toppled last weekend by a Wigan side who were winless in their previous seven matches. But they have been enjoying their return to the Championship, with attacking creativity in abundance upfront.
Charlton vs Leeds Head To Head
The head-to-head stats provide further justification for our Charlton vs Leeds predictions.
Indeed, in the last five fixtures between the two teams, the Whites have failed to win, losing three times and drawing twice.
True, the last clash took place in 2016. In the three years following, both sides have developed greatly, Leeds more so to imply that they’ll break their winless trend.
But a tough game is still on the cards, one that Bielsa’s men should edge.
Charlton Team News
The hosts made four changes last week ahead of their trip to Wigan which didn’t end to well for them.
Captain Jason Pearce was only fit enough for the bench and could be out for the upcoming weeks too.
In his stead, Darren Pratley will don the armband after coming in for West Brom loanee Sam Field.
Meanwhile, Jonny Williams reclaimed his place in the starting XI. The former Bolton man stepped in for Erhun Oztumer.
So many changes ultimately led to the Addick’s defeat, and our Charlton vs Leeds predictions see this week’s game finishing the same way.
Leeds Team News
Meanwhile, in line with all of the early season woes, Bielsa again has an injury-ridden starting XI to manage.
Spearheading the list is Adam Forshaw. The Englishman missed the draw against Derby and could be sidelined for the upcoming weeks as he recovers from a hip injury.
Jamie Shackleton continues to deputize for the former Middleborough man.
Another long-time absentee is Luke Ayling. Injured ahead of pre-season that saw him miss out on the opening stages of the season, Ayling is still undergoing rehabilitation.
The 28-year-old made his first full appearance of the new campaign last Monday night with the under-23’s. But the Leeds right-back still has a long way to go.
A tidbit of good news for Leeds fan is the fitness of the much-loved Pablo Hernandez. The Spaniard was substituted in the second half of last weekend’s game against Derby. According to Bielsa, there are no injury concerns to report.
Charlton vs Leeds Betting Tips
The chances of a win for the Addick’s look even more unlikely when you take a look at the betting markets.
Priced up at 47/10 – the perfect suitor for our Charlton vs Leeds predictions – there are very few who would punt on those odds.
The chances of the points being shared aren’t any more appealing. 33/10 is what our Charlton vs Leeds match bets are projecting.
A Leeds win, however, is the far better wager to put your money on. Bielsa’s men come into the game as 14/25 favourites, and there’s very little to suggest that the game won’t end in the Whites favour.
