Charlton is settling into life quickly on their return to the EFL Championship and threatening to firmly ensconce themselves into the title race.
Nottingham Forest is once again unpredictable; chaotic and dishevelled one week, consummate professionals gambolling to a 3 – 0 win the next.
Who knows how it will turn out when the two meet at the Valley! The odds favour the home side but Forest are more than capable of springing a surprise.
Our Charlton vs Nottingham Forest predictions are also leaning towards Charlton with the home side backed by an increasingly proud Valley crowd. Can the visitors really pull off a shock?
The biggest shock would be both turning up in the promotion places come the end of the season. Check out our Complete EFL Championship 2019/20 preview, predictions and betting tips to see if we think that’s likely.
Charlton vs Nottingham Forest Predictions
Both sides will be pleased – to varying degrees – with their start to the season. Charlton, the fresh young bucks promoted from League One, took on three historic names of the English game and came out winning.
Or drawing; the key thing was that the Addicks didn’t lose. Lee Bowyer, the novice manager, is learning his trade quickly as his players surge to second place in the table.
Wins over Stoke City and Blackburn Rovers accompanied a well-earned point at Barnsley; the Tykes beat Charlton last season as they both chased the top spots in the lower division.
Anything which gives them a ‘+’ comparatively speaking pleases Bowyer as he looks ahead to a bright future in what was previously a gloomy part of south-east London.
Lyle Taylor is proving Charlton’s golden boy this season; three in three with Chelsea loanee Conor Gallagher scoring twice in his last two.
Seven goals in three games make Charlton the Championship’s top-scoring side with only Luton serving up more entertainment value. The Hatters games saw 12 goals, one more than Bowyer’s team.
Therein is the chink in the Addicks armoury; defensively, they are yet to keep a clean sheet which may yet cost them dear as the season progresses. In the league at least.
Keeping a clean sheet cost them dear, however, in the Carabao Cup as they lost a penalty shootout to Forest Green Rovers after a goalless 180 minutes.
Enter the unknown factor in our Charlton vs Nottingham Forest predictions. Or as their fans call them, Nottingham Forest.
Sabri Lamouchi’s promotion aspirations were dented on the opening day of the season when West Bromwich Albion left the City Ground with the points after a 2 – 1 win.
SInce then, Forest have impressed. A point at Elland Road underlined what they are capable of, with Birmingham City despatched very comfortably last weekend. Are things turning around in the East Midlands?
It’s too soon to say.
Forest were consistently inconsistent last season and while their results are improving, the same foibles which cost them dear, are close to the surface this time around.
Saturday’s win over Birmingham was their only convincing performance of the season. Even the Carabao Cup nearly proved a banana skin as they struggled to beat Fleetwood Town. Tiago Silva made all the difference that night. No, not that Tiago Silva.
Lewis Grabban is the leading scorer this season with two goals, Cash and Lolley also found the net for Forest completing any number of ‘dad jokes’ you want. Michael Dawson, the other scorer, a no-nonsense English defender, brings us all down to earth.
On the road, Forest are out of sorts. Including the end of last season, it’s one win in 10 (D4, L5) and until Lamouchi resolves those issues, his side are unlikely to make any progress.
They may struggle in this match. Charlton lost just two of the past 24 (W17, D5) at the Valley. A home win is definitely on the cards.
Charlton vs Nottingham Forest Head to Head
Head-to-head records don’t come any closer than this: Charlton, W14; Drawn, 14; Nottingham Forest, W14.
However, it’s been a distinctly Charlton-flavoured fixture in the last six meetings. The Londoners have two wins and four draws, never conceding more than one goal in any of the encounters.
It isn’t a game which resonates with goals; eight of the last 10 saw under 2.5 goals.
Charlton Athletic Team News
Lee Bowyer has a strong squad to choose from with injuries depriving him of just Lewis Page and Beram Kayal.
Given recent form, it will be a surprise if there are many changes to the XI which has lifted the club to second in the table.
Nottingham Forest Team News
Forest have almost got a squad of players on the injury list; it’s almost a case of asking fans to turn up with boots…
Hefele, Carvalho, Darikwa, Yates, and Benalouane are the key figures missing.
Charlton vs Nottingham Forest Betting Tips
While the history books point to a low-scoring affair, the current form suggests otherwise. Charlton are understandably favourite – 17/10 with Novibet – but the draw is an enticing 9/4.
The prospect of goals can’t be ignored. Over 3.5 goals is 49/20 but if you think history is impossible to ignore, exactly two goals is 47/20.
