Crystal Palace vs Aston Villa Predictions, Betting Tips And Match Preview 16/05/21

In Sunday’s early Premier League kick off, Crystal Palace welcome Aston Villa to Selhurst Park. Both sides will be aiming to finish the season in the top half and this game could be key to that.

Crystal Palace come into this on the back of a disappointing 3-1 defeat to Southampton in midweek. It could have been so different for the Eagles though, as Luka Milivojevic missed a first half penalty.

That loss won’t have done their confidence much good. In the second half, they played like a team that is ready for its summer holidays.

Aston Villa looked like they could have challenged for the European places early in the season. However, their form has tailed off in 2021 and the best they can hope for is probably a 10th placed finish.

Villa’s 0-0 draw with Everton on Thursday showed just how much they missed Ollie Watkins. The forward was suspended following a late red card against Manchester United last weekend.

With nothing on the line for either side, this could be a tight game. Equally, with the shackles off, it could be a classic.

Below you’ll find our preview of this Premier League fixture as well as our predictions, team news, recommended bets and more…

Crystal Palace vs Aston Villa Predictions

Both sides come into this game with the kind of form you’d expect from a club fighting relegation in the Premier League.

Crystal Palace have only managed a single win in their last six games. That was a 2-0 win over already relegated Sheffield United last week.

Prior to that, they went on a run of three straight defeats. It was a tough period for Palace though, as those losses came to Chelsea, Leicester and Man City respectively.

Like most teams this season, a lot of Palace’s best results have come on the road. They have had a fair few wins at home too, though.

Their recent win over Sheffield United will have provided some confidence. However, they were quickly brought back down to earth when beaten by Southampton.

Palace have plenty of quality in their team and are more than capable of winning this game. It will be tough for the hosts though, as Villa don’t roll over easily.

Aston Villa’s recent run of form will be a concern for manager Dean Smith. Like Palace, the visitors have only won one of their last six games, too.

The three defeats they’ve suffered in that period have come against Liverpool, Man City and Man Utd. With that in mind, some perspective is needed.

Their one win came against Everton at the beginning of May. Goals from Ollie Watkins and Anwar El-Ghazi sealed the three points that day.

The two teams met again on Thursday, only to play out a pretty uneventful 0-0 draw. Villa were missing key players for that game though.

Our Crystal Palace vs Aston Villa predictions expect the visitors to win this one by a tight margin.

Crystal Palace vs Aston Villa Head to Head

The last five meetings between these two have produced three Aston Villa wins and two Crystal Palace wins.

The last game between the two clubs saw Villa run out comfortable 3-0 winners in December. At that point, Villa’s European qualification hopes were still very much alive.

Dean Smith’s side also won the meeting before that. A brace from Trezeguet sealed a 2-0 win at Villa Park.

Crystal Palace won 1-0 when the teams clashed in August 2019. A solo strike from Jordan Ayew secured the three points that day.

The other Palace win came all the way back in August 2015. Goals from Scott Dann and Bakary Sako were enough for a 2-1 win.

The recurring theme of this fixture tends to see the home side prevail. However, current form must be considered and on that, Villa arguably hold the edge.

The home side continue to be without long term absentees Mamadou Sakho and James McArthur. Neither are expected to feature again this season.

Striker Conor Wickham, who hasn’t played a single minute for Palace this season, is still out. There will be question marks about his Palace future this coming summer.

Defender James Tomkins is also likely to miss this game. The 32 year old has been out of action since January.

Our Crystal Palace v Aston Villa predictions expect Cheikhou Kouyate to partner Gary Cahill in centre defence.

Christian Benteke and Wilfried Zaha will lead the line. Either Ayew or Andros Townsend will partner the duo to make up the attacking three.

Trezeguet suffered a knee injury against Liverpool in April. The Egyptian is still on the sidelines and isn’t expected to return before the end of this campaign.

Dean Smith will be sweating on the fitness of talisman and club captain Jack Grealish. The midfielder was out for nearly three months, but came off the bench against Everton on Thursday.

He probably isn’t fully match fit yet, so will likely start on the bench. If Villa are struggling to create chances, he may be brought on to provide a spark.

Some good news for Villa fans is the return of Ollie Watkins from suspension. The forward was sent off against Man Utd and missed the Everton game.

Crystal Palace vs Aston Villa Betting Tips

The home side are the 2/1 outsiders to win the game in 90 minutes according to our Crystal Palace v Aston Villa match bets.

It seems the traders agree with our predictions for this, as Aston Villa are the 13/10 favourites to win the game.

If you think this will be a tight game between the sides, the draw is priced up at 5/2. None of the recent clashes between these have finished honours even though, and it seems unlikely this time.

With the return of top scorer Ollie Watkins, Villa should have more than enough to win this game.
