England have all the work to do in the second test-match of this summer’s Ashes series.
Thrashed by Australia at Edgbaston, Eoin Morgan’s men will have to rally if they are to avoid a repeat of that larruping.
Aside from shoring up their bowling, the batsmen also need to clean up their act.
Yet they could be given a hand from the skies above.
With rain forecast to interrupt play, the Three Lions could just keep the Aussies indoors long enough to see their way to a draw.
So, our England vs Australia predictions and betting tips wager that the temperamental British summer will be the star act of Wednesday’s game and see the points shared…
England vs Australia Predictions
Despite the fact that the hosts were hammered by 251 runs in the first innings, there is hope that they may be able to make the most of the conditions at Lords.
The same pitch where England humiliated Ireland only a few months ago.
Amidst the cloudy conditions, it was Chris Woakes and Stuart Broad who did the lions share of the work.
The former man, Woakes, snapped up a sixer, while Broad went for 4-19.
While the current weather may favour spin bowlers – as Nathan Lyon showcased so splendidly at Lords last week – it’s the aforementioned duo whom our England vs Australia predictions project thriving.
And that’s without bringing Jofra Archer into the conversation.
The young fast-bowler proved his worth across the World Cup, and even more so in the final where his bowling won England the title in a tense super-over.
Standing in place for the injured Jimmy Anderson, Archer will be crucial to England’s hopes of keeping the Aussies at bay.
Especially with Steve Smith leading their batting lineup.
The in-form batsman has already amassed five centuries and a double in six matches against England since the start of 2017/18, and it’s clear that pegging him down early will be key to a potential draw.
Yet that’s all down to whether the rain intervenes.
Australia already had this in mind during the World Cup a few months ago, when their B team got to train in London while the main squad battled it out at Headingly, in an attempt to acclimatize to the conditions.
However, the defeats to both India and England in what turned out to be a memorable Cricket World Cup clash proved that they can be undone when it’s not as sunny as 28 degrees and hotter all the time.
This Wednesday’s clash should see cloudy spells and plenty of rain, which we’re expecting to disrupt the Aussie lineup.
So much so, that a draw called by the umpires may be the safest bets to punt on.
England vs Australia Head To Head
In glorious summers gone by, Australia thrashed England at Lords and Sydney as they did two years ago.
However, the temperamental British conditions will favour England this time around.
Fans of the Three Lions will only have to cast their memories back to 2015 to realise why.
With Archer, Woakes – otherwise known as the lord of Lords – and Broad, the hosts should have enough to keep the Aussies at bay.
Mother nature will do the rest.
England Team News
For England, the news surrounding Anderson doesn’t look good.
The Three Lions all-time wicket-taker picked up a knock to the calf on the first morning of day 1.
With Morgan and Bayliss not wanting to risk a hasty return, Anderson will miss the second test and will be replaced by Jofra Archer.
Hia absence could be a costly one, especially since we mentioned in our 2019 Ashes predictions that he would play a big role in England’s chances to reclaim the trophy.
Joining him on the sidelines is Moeen Ali, whose woeful performance at the hands of Lyon sees him dropped for Jack Leach.
Lyon has now dismissed Ali in nine of the last 10 innings he’s bowled to him – which is why our England vs Australia predictions foresees Leach’s involvement as a more lucrative choice.
Australia Team News
Meanwhile, in the Aussie camp, the return of Starc should be a cause for concern.
The fast-bowler was left out in the first test in the way of Mitchell Marsh.
Yet, Starc’s inclusion means that there’ll be a different angle in which to bowl England’s batters out.
This will be especially true if the weather complies and covers the skies above Lords with a blanket of clouds.
Alongside Josh Hazlewood, Cummins and Lyon, Starc’s Australia pose a deadly bowling lineup.
England vs Australia Betting Tips
With the forecast of rain in store, our England vs Australia predictions seems apt.
The odds about a draw are indeed trading at 11/2, while each team has been projected for a win at the same 6/5 bet in our England vs Australia match bets.
All in all, Morgan’s men could find an escape route through the great British Summer, even if they are at the mercy of Smith’s batting.
