The Toffees host the reigning Premier League champions this Saturday who are fresh off the back of delivering an 8-0 drumming to Watford.
While our Everton vs Manchester City predictions aren’t forecasting a similar score-line to play out, it could get ugly for Marco Silva and his men.
But the Merseyside outfit could also make it an even contest if they target City’s central defence crisis – one currently operating without experience, skill, or level-headedness.
So, while Goodison Park won’t prepare itself for an absolute mauling, they may just be edged to victory by the Citizens.
Whether this translates to Everton’s position at the end of the season is anyone’s guess. You can read ours in our 2019/20 Premier League season preview.
First thing’s first…
Everton vs Manchester City Predictions
The Citizens have been suffering from a defensive crisis in the last few weeks. But they have the best get-out-of-jail card in the league: their attack.
With two or more goals scored in their last seven matches, it’s no wonder that teams are being taken apart – Pep Guardiola simply has an embarrassment of forward riches unlike any we’ve seen in the history of the Premier League.
And Quique Sanchez Flores’ Watford felt the full brunt of that attack last weekend when they suffered a staggering 8-0 drumming at the Etihad.
Indeed, the afternoon started as innocently as it possibly could’ve. The Hornets had travelled to the home of the champions with a plan in mind to upset Pep Guardiola’s tactical setup from the getgo. But 52 seconds in and the visitors were the ones who were found sleeping in defence.
15 minutes later and it was already 5-0 to the Citizens – the fastest any side had reached that scoreline in a Premier League game.
From David Silva to Sergio Aguero, Bernardo Silva and Riyad Mahrez, there was simply no stopping the hosts. And Raheem Sterling wasn’t even on the pitch.
Just imagine the fantasy Premier League football points racked up over the country during that game.
The Hornet’s only saving grace was that it finished 8-0, and not nine or ten, which would’ve equalled and beaten the record of the biggest victory in the Premier League era, held by Manchester United.
But while Flores’ men had a miserable afternoon, every cloud has it’s silver lining. For any Everton reps watching, or even Silva himself, our Everton vs Manchester City predictions wagers there is one potential chink in the Citizen’s armour that could lead to joy for the Merseysiders this weekend: Guardiola’s central defence.
The absence of Aymeric Laporte has taken its toll in the last few weeks. None more so than in the champions shock 3-2 defeat to newly-promoted Norwich City two Saturday’s ago.
With a nervy partnership of John Stones and Nicolas Otamendi manning the central defence, not many were surprised of how easily the Canaries penetrated City’s back four.
So much so, that Norwich were 2-0 up in the space of half an hour, thanks to an inch-perfect Kenny McLean header, and a Todd Cantwell finish that involved the ever-present Finnish Teemu Pukki.
If Everton are able to apply the same pressure and intensity, and target that central defence, there’s no reason why they shouldn’t score.
Sure, last weekend’s defeat to Sheffield Wednesday poses more questions about their own defence. But this weekend, they won’t be playing against a side camped in their own defensive third. City’s counterattacking style should present the Toffees with opportunities of their own.
And considering that Everton have won 10 Premier League home matches against reigning champions, even if they don’t come away with all three points, they’ll be asking more questions of this City defence.
Everton vs Manchester City Head To Head
Everton have one draw in the last five games in this fixture.
It is slightly foreboding that the only positive result came when City were in the process of staking their claim on the Premier League.
And the games from there on have swayed in the favour of the Citizens. 3-1, 1-3, 2-0 are the kinds of results we’ve seen in recent years between the two teams.
Yes, the defeat to Norwich proves that Guardiola’s defence can be undone. But our Everton vs Manchester City predictions are opting for history to repeat this Saturday.
Everton Team News
The Toffees only have Jean-Phillipe Gbamin and Andres Gomes ruled out of this weekend’s clash. The rest of the squad will feature with a clean bill of health.
Expect the likes of Alex Iwobi, Moise Kean, and Fabian Delph – three key players – to make it into the starting XI.
Richarlison is also expected to be the third wheel in the attacking trio, armed with the goal of penetrating a struggling opposition central defence.
Such a lineup is expected to breach the reigning champion’s defence. And yet our Everton vs Manchester City predictions still don’t foresee the hosts claiming the three points.
Manchester City Team News
In the opposite dugout, despite operating as betting favourites, Guardiola has much to ponder.
Of course, no Laporte and Stones is a problem. The former will be sidelined for the next six months, while Stones has the best part of five weeks out ahead of him.
This puts Taylor Harwood Bellis and Eric Garcia in contention to start alongside Otamendi on Saturday. The 17 and 18-year-old central defenders proved that they were more than capable to do the job against Preston during the midweek Carabao Cup fixture.
But who will start this weekend?
On the attacking forefront, Sterling, who was rested in the triumph over Watford will make a return to the starting XI.
Leroy Sane is the only other long-term absentee.
