The inaugural World Boxing Super Series super-middleweight concludes on Friday with George Groves vs Callum Smith.
The winner will be awarded the Muhammad Ali Trophy, with the WBA super world and WBC Diamond titles also on the line at Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah Sports City.
George Groves vs Callum Smith matchup
Groves beat Chris Eubank Jr comfortably on points in February, despite many expecting the latter to go on and meet Smith in the final of the eight-man elimination tournament.
The 30-year-old dislocated his shoulder in the closing rounds of that fight and required surgery, forcing the WBSS to delay the final from May to September.
But the Londoner’s team are confident he’s fighting fit and will suffer no recurrence of the problem against Smith.
Smith brings a perfect 24-fight record and 17 knockouts with him to Saudi Arabia.
The 28-year-old Liverpudlian comes into the fight on the back of two points verdicts, having overcome 34-year-old Dutchman Nieky Holzken in the semi-final as a comprehensive 117-111, 118-110, 117-111 winner.
The 6’3” powerhouse has always said he wanted to face Groves and what better time to do it than for his first shot at a world title.
