Glorious Goodwood Betting Tips And Predictions – 27/072021

One of the sporting highlights of the year begins tomorrow when, from Tuesday the 27th of July through Saturday the 31st of July, the Sussex Downs come alive as Glorious Goodwood swings back into life.

The five day meet, which dates back to 1901, is a fantastic feast of flat racing where many of the biggest and best names in the game, both two legged and four legged, will be in attendance.

We have picked out four of the biggest races of the meeting including three of the UK’s 36 annual Group 1 flat races, the Sussex Stakes, the Goodwood Cup and the Nassau Stakes as well as one of the most prestigious handicaps, the Stewards’ Cup, to help you make your picks for one of the world’s truly great horse racing festivals.

Let’s take a look

The Goodwood Cup 2021 Betting Tips

The Goodwood Gold Cup is set to go off at 15:35 on Tuesday the 27th of July 2021.

The top two for this race are moving in opposite directions as the much loved, well fancied seven year old Stradivarius continues to drift outwards, while Trueshan draws in.

The interest in the latter will very likely to be down what has been quite a bit of wet weather the UK has experienced this week – storms are still possible today and tonight in the area – and his well documented appreciation for a softer going.

Alan King’s five year old came home fifth last time he was in handicap company at Royal Ascot but conditions at Goodwood will be more to his liking this time around.

Casting our minds back to last summer, Trueshan took on and beat Stradivarius in the Long Distance Cup at Ascot on Champions Day.

We knew then he had class as a stayer and he looks the star pick, and yes we include Stradivarius in that, for Tuesday’s big Group One.

Unbeaten Over Course And Distance

Stradivarius is unbeaten in four runs over course and distance. Subjectivist was the horse to beat him when he successfully took down the Ascot Gold Cup.

Sadly for horse racing, Subjectivist suffered a potentially season ending leg injury and has been ruled out for the rest of the season so won’t be able to take on Stradivarius again, hence the latter’s short price.

All the same, one week ago John & Thady Gosden’s runner was odds on and now, at the time of writing at least, he is odds against which can only be a good thing.

Frankie Dettori will be onboard the three year old thoroughbred who surprisingly has only one win in five races.

Spanish Mission On A Mission

Another interesting horse to take note of is Spanish Mission for those looking to take on a longer punt.

Queen’s Vase winner Santiago is unbeaten on soft ground and came third in this race last year but was beaten by Spanish Mission – as was another Goodwood Cup runner Sir Ron Priestley – in the Group Two Yorkshire Cup Stakes at York back in May.

Andrew Balding’s five year old also split the difference between Subjectivist and Stradivarius in the Ascot Gold Cup.

Jockey William Buick is in great shape having won the King George and the International Stakes at Ascot recently, while Balding is in the middle of another successful season so expect Spanish Mission to test the top two all the way.

The Qatar Sussex Stakes 2021 Betting Tips

The highlight of Wednesday’s day two is the Qatar Sussex Stakes otherwise known as the Duel On The Downs which will see horses three years and up go to post for 15:35 UK time.

Unfortunately, the duel we were all looking forward to this year will not happen as John Gosden’s four year old Palace Pier will not be attending the festival.

The Lockinge Stakes and Queen Anne Stakes winner has not recovered from a blood disorder in time to lay down a challenge to 2,000 Guineas and St James’s Palace Stakes winner Poetic Flare.

Other than that, and in similar fashion to Saturday’s King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Qipco Stakes, this will be a top class Group One clash of the generations as this year’s three year old milers get the opportunity to test themselves against the older generation.

Poetic Flare Is The Short Price Favourite

It is a three year old that leads the betting and by some way too as Jim Bolger’s colt Poetic Flare is the short priced favourite by quite a long way.

In fact, as we write this, the next horse in the betting, Order of Australia, is hovering around the 7/1 mark.

However, while Poetic Flare has only lost twice this year, both defeats have come when the going was soft as is likely to be the case at Goodwood this week.

Elsewhere, should he run, St Mark’s Basilica always looks a sound choice.

The Eclipse winner has won his last four races and is considered to be the leading three year old of the season thus far and could provide some better value.

The Qatar Nassau Stakes 2021 Betting Tips

At 15:35 on Thursday, the day’s big race, the Qatar Nassau Stakes, will set off over a distance of one mile and two furlongs.

The race is exclusively for fillies aged three and up we are still awaiting final declarations right now.

Many of the horses originally muted for this race ran in King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Qipco Stakes at Ascot on Saturday.

This includes Love who was beaten into third at the weekend.

No Love

Taking out the dead certs to be missing for our Glorious Goodwood betting tips, we would like to think that French Oaks winner Joan Of Arc, the current second favourite, will be present.

She has impressed massively in France where she won the Prix de Diane at Chantilly over a little over a mile and two furlongs.

A drop back in trip here won’t worry her that’s for sure.

What might be more concerning is that she faces Empress Josephine here who beat her in the Irish 1,000 Guineas at the Curragh back in May.

But it’s Audarya that is likely to be at the top of the betting.

Of course, this could change before the runners go to post, but she looks to be the horse to beat.

She was beaten at Ascot in the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes but that was by Love, and she will not run here, leaving James Fanshawe’s five year old the race’s main target.

Love may be absent, but Aidan O’Brien’s Ballydoyle stables are still likely to be very well represented with Falmouth runner up Mother Earth and Belmont Oaks winner Santa Barbara hopefully lining up on Thursday.

The Stewards’ Cup 2021 Betting Tips

On Saturday, we have the Stewards’ Cup which will set off over six furlongs of Sussex Downs turf and is open to horses three years or older.

The draw is not yet known but 28 should go to post for one of the top handicaps of the flat season.

Three year old First Folio has two wins out of three so far this season and has long been fancied for this one since the ante post betting opened.

Although both of his wins came against his own age group, First Folio can be forgiven for his solo defeat, since arriving from across the English Chanel.

Joint Favourites

His joint favourite partner, Hurricane Ivor, on the other hand has seen his odds slash dramatically following on from his second place finish to Significantly at Ascot earlier this month in the Heritage Handicap.

William Haggas’ four year old has had three runs for since coming over from France and really should have tasted victory in at least two of these.

The main concern with this horse is his effectiveness on soft ground which could be a problem.

Robert Cowell’s Arecibo is another name on the lips of punters.

He came second in the Group One King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot in what was the performance of a lifetime but the six year old will need to contend with top weight here if is to go one better.

This time last year, Summerghand took the honours but came home a disappointing 10th when last in Group One company so be wary of backing a repeat victory.
