Great Britain’s Women’s football team take on Chile Women in their 2020 Olympics opener on Wednesday morning.
The 2020 Olympic games are taking place in Tokyo, Japan. As a result, all football matches at the Games will take place from 8.30am onwards UK time.
The Team GB Women’s Football team hasn’t competed since London hosted the Olympics in 2012. On that occasion, the Football Association (FA) came to an agreement with the British Olympic Association (BOA) to form a team to occupy the automatic qualifying place of the host nation.
It was announced by FIFA that any future Olympics would not feature a GB football team unless the English, Welsh, Scottish and Northern Irish FAs all agreed. They were unable to agree for the 2016 Olympics, but formed an agreement for the 2020 Olympics.
The GB Women’s team qualified for this year’s Olympics courtesy of England Women’s performance in the 2019 World Cup. The Lionesses made it to the semi-finals, where they were beaten by eventual champions USA.
Unsurprisingly, the GB team is made up of mostly England players. This adds an element of expectation around the team, who will surely fancy their chances of at least getting a medal.
Chile Women had to qualify for the Olympics via a play-off with Cameroon Women. The tie took place over two legs, with Chile winning the first 2-1. The second leg ended 0-0 to see Chile through.
Being an established national team, Chile are much more active than the GB team. Despite that, Chile will more or less be facing an England team, as such they’re not expected to win.
Below, we’ll preview this Olympics Women’s Football fixture and provide our predictions, the team news, our recommended bets and more…
Great Britain Women vs Chile Women Predictions
Great Britain are expected to progress from the group stages of the tournament. A win here would be the perfect start to achieving that.
England caretaker manager Hege Riise will take charge of the GB team for the Olympics. Riise is a former Norway international herself who won the World Cup, Euros and Olympics gold during her playing days.
She’ll bring plenty of knowledge and experience to the side and the fact that she already knows the majority of the squad well is another plus.
Riise has a very strong squad at her disposal. Fans of the England women’s team will be familiar with names such as Lucy Bronze, Steph Houghton, Jill Scott and Ellen White, who are all included.
They’re all sure to play a massive part in the Great Britain team in this opening game. Experience is key in major tournaments, and this Great Britain team has that in abundance.
Chile Women come into the Olympics as the 37th ranked team in the world. That isn’t a bad ranking at all, but they are the lowest ranked team in Group E.
If we use England Women’s FIFA ranking of sixth, then Great Britain are the highest ranked team in the group.
Not much is expected of the South Americans in this group or, indeed, the tournament. However, Olympics football doesn’t always go as expected and surprises are a dime a dozen at all international tournaments.
With that said, Great Britain are expected to win this game comfortably. Whether or not they’ll do enough to get a medal, only time will tell.

Great Britain Women vs Chile Women Head to Head
Given that Great Britain isn’t a recognised FIFA nation, there are no head to head records between these two countries.
The England Women’s team have also never played Chile, so there are no previous clashes to inform us of how this one may go.
What we can do is look at the recent form of the two teams. Great Britain Women’s last appearance at the Olympics came in 2012, in which they were eliminated in the last of 16 by Canada.
However the impressive campaign by England Women in the 2019 World Cup is a good indicator of the form of Great Britain.
Chile Women have won just one of their last five international fixtures. That win was the victory against Cameroon, which secured their qualification for the Olympics.
They’ve also failed to beat a European team since 2013, so the stats are not in Chile’s favour ahead of this clash.

Great Britain are spoilt for choice on the goalkeeper front. England stoppers Ellie Roebuck and Carly Telford are included in the squad. Riise is expected to side with the more experienced Telford for the opener.
If Riise does opt for experience, then Lucy Bronze and Steph Houghton will no doubt be involved from the off. Both played for Team GB at the 2012 Olympics.
Jill Scott and Kim Little are expected to feature in the midfield for Great Britain. Who accompanies them will entirely depend on the formation that head coach Riise decides to go with in this game.
Ellen White and Fran Kirby could be the ones to provide the attacking flair to the GB team. Our Great Britain Women v Chile Women predictions expect both players to start here.
Chile Women Team News – D L D W L
Lyon Women’s goalkeeper Christiane Endler is the number one choice for Chile. She comes here on the back of winning the women’s French championship with PSG, before transferring to Lyon. She will start the game in goal for Chile here.
Carlo Guerrero and Daniela Pardo are expected to partner each other in the heart of defence. The experienced duo will be tasked with keeping Great Britain’s attacking players under wraps.
Karen Araya, Yessenia Lopez and Yastin Jimenez will make up the three in the centre of midfield.
Maria Urrutia or Daniela Zamora will be most likely to lead the line for Chile in this game. Neither are prolific goalscorers though and they’re not expected to trouble Great Britain in this area.
Great Britain Women vs Chile Women Betting Tips
