Liverpool make their return to Istanbul this Tuesday, 14 years after that historic Champions League final win over AC Milan.
This time around, the opponents are Frank Lampard’s Chelsea, and the competition the UEFA Super Cup.
As European Champions, the Reds go into the game as favourites to win.
And considering the struggles that Chelsea are facing ahead of this clash – transfer ban, injured players, poor performances – Jurgen Klopp’s team should come away with their first trophy of the season.
So, without further ado…
Liverpool vs Chelsea Predictions
The first all-English UEFA Super Cup could see Liverpool clinch yet another trophy in their list of European feats.
After all, it was only months earlier that the Reds claimed their sixth Champions League trophy in Madrid.
Which means they come into this season in the mood to lift even more silverware.
For Lampard and Chelsea, this spells trouble.
Even without Sadio Mane in the opening stages of the season, Klopp’s men looked formidable against Norwich.
They shipped three goals in under half an hour against a suspect defence – in all actuality, Chelsea’s is not far off the Canaries.
And this is without acknowledging the sheer depth of attack the Reds possess, which only further informs our Liverpool vs Chelsea predictions and betting tips.
On Sunday, we saw the Blues dismantled in a 4-0 defeat via Manchester United by Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford.
The likes of Kurt Zouma and Cesar Azpilicueta were unable to contain United’s wingers, and there were gaps all throughout Chelsea’s formation which Paul Pogba and co slipped through.
The speed and ruthlessness of the Red Devils attack is what condemned Lampard to a loss on the first game of his reign – two things Liverpool possess in abundance.
Whether it’s Mohamed Salah down one wing, or Andy Robertson down the other, counterattacking and ‘heavy metal’ football is the style in which the European Champions operate in (which you can read about on our football betting tips page).
But Lampard can only make the most of what he has on hand.
Unfortunately, the young players the 41-year-old has fielded haven’t made the cut, as was evident on Sunday too.
At the moment, there is very little to work with, which is why we’re expecting Liverpool to claim the win on Wednesday.
Liverpool vs Chelsea Head To Head
In 181 fixtures between the clubs, Liverpool narrowly edges it with 77 recorded wins to Chelsea’s 63.
The same dominance is also prevalent in their Super Cup clashes.
While Liverpool claimed three victories against Hamburg, Bayern Munich and CSKA Moscow, Chelsea’s last win came in 1998 against Real Madrid.
They lost their most recent Super Cup game to Bayern on penalties.
Before that, it was a 4-1 defeat to Atletico Madrid, which only further informs our Liverpool vs Chelsea predictions and betting tips.
Liverpool Team News
News coming out of the Reds camp surrounds the fitness of Allison Becker.
Liverpool’s no. 1 injured his calf in what looked to be a fairly innocuous manoeuvre in his team’s 4-1 win over Norwich on Friday night.
However, Allison had to be stretchered off and has completely been ruled out of this Tuesday’s Super Cup.
His replacement is Adrian – Liverpool’s most recent transfer signing.
The former West Ham keeper was sent straight into the firing line after the Brazilian was subbed off and may well be used by Klopp against Chelsea.
Elsewhere, Joel Matip should take place of Joe Gomez.
Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andrew Robertson are expected to keep their spots in the back four.
The midfield will also see quite the rotation.
Expect Naby Keita, James Milner and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to all be a feature of the starting XI.
As for the attacking trio, Mane will most likely be rested, with Salah and Firmino set to be a part of the team.
Chelsea Team News
For Lampard, an injury-hit squad isn’t going to help his chances.
With Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Callum Hudson-Odoi, Antonio Rudiger, and potentially N’Golo Kante out of the action, the former midfielder will have to field young talent in an effort to steer Chelsea towards the Super Cup trophy.
The only positive is the return of Willian.
Brought into the Copa America to replace the injured Neymar, the Brazilian picked up a knock in the semi-final win over Peru.
Willian is now ready to return to action against the Reds in Turkey this Tuesday.
