Liverpool vs Norwich City predictions

The Premier League is back!

The 2019-20 season begins with a bang at Anfield as Liverpool host last season’s Championship title-winners, Norwich City.

For the Canaries, it is a baptism of fire after a three-season absence from the top-flight. Daniel Farke is hoping his team will avoid the same fate as the last Norwich City side to win promotion: instant relegation.

Jurgen Klopp, meanwhile, will be encouraged by Liverpool’s second-half performance at Wembley last weekend. The Reds deserved their draw in the Community Shield and may feel they had the chances to win it.

Our Liverpool vs Norwich City predictions, betting tips and match preview all point to a home win. But can the Canaries open the season with a shock?

Liverpool vs Norwich City Predictions

The disappointment of last season’s runners-up spot remains raw at Liverpool.

One defeat, 97 points; no club has ever come this close to glory to end up with nothing. The Champions League provided an alternative joy on Merseyside but the league title is a scratch they cannot itch.

Norwich City, with fewer points, won their division, claiming the Championship title. They will surprise a few teams in the Premier League this season, the question is whether that will be enough.

While all the focus is on Jurgen Klopp’s achievements, Daniel Farke’s are no less impressive. Norwich’s stylish passing game saw them stay in the upper echelons of the table all season long.

The Canaries proved durable and claimed an incredible number of points late on in games. By Christmas, they won 20 points in the final five minutes of matches. Farke’s men will need to draw on that experience if they are to avoid the drop.

It also makes Liverpool vs Norwich City predictions tricky. The expectation is that the Reds, with their forward line of Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah, will make short work of the visitors. It’s not unrealistic to see them scoring four goals, maybe more given the history of the fixture.

However, Klopp must guard against over-confidence. The Reds were woeful in the first half of last weekend’s Community Shield with Manchester City bossing proceedings.

In Teemu Pukki, Norwich possesses a striker capable of pulling Liverpool’s defensive pairing out of position, preying on any weaknesses on the night.

Virgil van Dijk proved the point at Wembley, with Gabriel Jesus becoming the first player in a year to dribble past him. His pride was wounded but his stat kept intact after the FA deemed the Community Shield is not classified as a competitive game. Try telling that to the victorious players and fans…

It is the Norwich defence, however, which come under the most scrutiny with most of that coming from the Liverpool attack.

The absences of Christoph Zimmerman and possibly Timm Klose will hurt them. Jamal Lewis and Max Aarons both have big roles in what will be a makeshift defence.

Liverpool vs Norwich City Head to Head

This is the 65th meeting between the two sides with Liverpool firmly on top (W35, D15). On Merseyside, the Reds are even more dominant in 32 matches (W21, D5).

It’s been 25 years since Norwich City won this fixture and since they beat Liverpool home or away. Jeremy Goss’ goal at Anfield made the difference in April 1994 but since then, it’s been a miserable run of form for the East Anglians (D2, L10).

Indeed, it’s been one defensive nightmare after another with Liverpool scoring 27 goals in the last seven meetings, with five on four separate occasions, which is why our Liverpool vs Norwich City predictions see the Reds winning this Friday.

Liverpool Team News

Nathaniel Clyne remains sidelined and with no return date yet following his ACL injury.

Jurgen Klopp’s caution last weekend over Mane and James Milner is rewarded by their availability for this match. The Senegalese striker is ready for a place in the starting line-up with Divock Origi set to make way.

Milner suffered a “minor muscle injury” but returned to training this week and is set to feature. Whether he starts depends on Klopp’s view on the performance of his full-backs last weekend. Expect a gentle return and a place on the bench.

Norwich City Team News

Of those occupying space in the Carrow Road treatment room, only Timm Klose has a genuine chance of making the trip to Anfield. Christoph Zimmerman, Louis Thompson, and Alexander Tettey are all ruled out. The latter pair not expected to return until mid-September at the earliest.

Norwich boss Daniel Farke is expected to largely keep faith with the players who achieved promotion. Of the summer’s new signings, Patrick Roberts and Josip Drmic are pushing for a place in the starting XI.

Liverpool vs Norwich City Betting Tips

Liverpool are overwhelming favourites for this match (3/20 to win) and nothing in our Liverpool vs Norwich City predictions contradicts that.

It’s a match in which any positive result for Norwich will bolster their confidence and self-belief. File a bad performance or result under “Learn the lessons”.

There is real value in the goals markets with Liverpool looking to send a message to the Premier League by ruthlessly dispatching the new boys.
