Last season’s Champions League finalists lock horns in the Premier League this weekend at Anfield.
And unfortunately for the travelling Spurs fans, our Liverpool vs Tottenham predictions are forecasting a performance from the visitors akin to that of May’s game at the Wanda Metropolitano.
Sure, Mauricio Pochettino’s men have racked up the wins in their European exploits this week. Yet, their domestic form sits on the opposite end of the spectrum.
How this affects their league positioning come May is still under scrutiny. Why not take a read of our thoughts in our 2019/20 Premier League season preview?
But first things first…
Liverpool vs Tottenham Predictions
This weekend’s opponents have been compared in many ways throughout the years, from their manager’s tactical guile to the ongoing trophy-haul issue.
But the performances that the Lillywhites have displayed this season puts the Reds miles ahead of their North London opposition.
Indeed, Spurs have struggled for form; thumped by Brighton, humiliated by Bayern Munich in their Champions League endeavours, overpowered by a classy Leicester City side, before nearly losing at the hands of a Watford side last week currently operating as the Premier League’s basement team.
Indeed, while the Hornets have only been able to amass a measly four points this season, they proved to be a thorn in the side of the Spurs defence– ominous signs for Poch considering the calibre of opposition his side face this weekend.
But back to Watford. Despite not having won once this season, they led the hosts for 80-odd minutes, delivering travelling Tottenham fans with the impending anxiety that their team would suffer a fifth defeat in six games.
And the duo leading the charge for Quique Sanchez Flores was Abdoulaye Doucoure and Gerard Deulofeu.
Through Deulofeu’s slick dribbling and Doucoure’s smart runs, there was plenty of attacking promise about Watford. And they could’ve come away with all three points had they not been stung by Dele Alli and another controversial VAR (Video Official Refereeing) decision.
A better side would have certainly punished the host’s defensive ineptitude. And that’s exactly what our Liverpool vs Tottenham predictions are forecasting.
You only have to take a look at the Reds recent performances – as we suspect Poch has been – to understand where our projections derive from.
Sure, last weekend’s game against Manchester United ended in a frustrating draw for the Merseysiders. But more so down to the Red Devils refusal to ‘attack, attack, attack’ – a style of play echoing shades of the Jose Mourinho era.
This weekend’s performance from the Reds should have a completely different intensity about it, given they’ll be playing against a side who value free-flowing football.
And as with many teams who try their hands at charging at the Reds, they’ll be vulnerable to a counterattack featuring the pacey Sadio Mane, skilful Roberto Firmino and prolific Mohamed Salah.
The attacking trio have been the perpetrators that have regularly inflicted defensive havoc on teams across the league. And with support from a world-class fullback pairing renowned for their assisting abilities – Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andrew Robertson – Spurs could be in for a long evening at Anfield.
Liverpool vs Tottenham Head To Head
This fixture has been a fruitful venture for the Reds down the years.
Indeed, aside from a 4-1 defeat to Spurs in Klopp’s opening season as Liverpool manager, the hosts have been racking up the wins.
True, the games have been tense and closely-matched. Particularly evident in the fact that the Merseysiders haven’t been able to win by more than two goals in the last five games, with two of those clashes involving last-minute thrillers.
And if our Liverpool vs Tottenham predictions are anything to go by, this Sunday’s match will be just as intriguing.
Liverpool Team News
Unfortunately for Pochettino, Liverpool have been graced with more positive news ahead of this weekend’s game in the form of the returning Salah.
The Egyptian wasn’t fit to play against the Reds arch-rivals United last Sunday as he nursed an ankle injury sustained prior to the international break.
In the midweek Champions League encounter against Genk, the 27-year-old was fit enough to feature in the starting XI and add another goal to his European tally.
With Salah in the side, just as the Kop faithful’s confidence, our Liverpool vs Tottenham predictions are boosted – there can only be goals in the game for the hosts with their talisman rejoining Mane and Firmino up front.
Tottenham Team News
The visitors have some good news themselves to brighten up the horizon for Spurs fans.
Indeed, the confirmation that Christian Eriksen is fully fit to play in this Sunday’s clash at Anfield should do the trick.
Against Watford last weekend, that certainly wasn’t the case, given that the Danish international was struggling with a dead leg he picked up on international duty.
Which means he’s guaranteed a place in the starting XI. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for Giovani Lo Celso and Ryan Sessegnon.
Both Spurs outfield players are in a race against time to be fit. And yet hamstring injuries have hampered their respective abilities to achieve match fitness prior to the game against the Reds.
The only other long-term absentee is Hugo Lloris, who injured his elbow against Brighton and Hove Albion.
Liverpool vs Tottenham Betting Tips
Even the betting tipsters agree in line with our Liverpool vs Tottenham predictions about a narrowly-won contest at Anfield.
None more so evident than in the odds dealt with both teams. Indeed, the Red operate as 23/50 betting favourites, while Pochettino’s men slide into proceedings as a 29/5 pick.
And even the chances of the spoils of war being shared in our Liverpool vs Tottenham match bets are pretty slim – 15/4.
With the odds tipping towards the hosts, and the Lillywhites on the descent, it seems as if Klopp and co will be maintaining their unbeaten start to the season.
