Frank Lampard’s Blues travel to the home of the reigning Premier League champions this Saturday with form on their side, having racked up six wins in their last six games.
Hanging onto third position, a mere point ahead of them, are this weekend’s opponents – Manchester City – who are very much swimming in choppy waters.
Indeed, the Citizens are fresh from defeat at the hands of the current league leaders Liverpool and follow up the international period playing host to a side capable of dismantling the best of defences, let alone one with a makeshift back four.
As such, our Manchester City vs Chelsea predictions are in agreement with the visitors, be it a draw or the three points altogether.
All in all – as mentioned in our 2019/20 Premier League season preview – the odds are not in Pep Guardiola’s favour.
Manchester City vs Chelsea predictions
The signs have been evident in the last few weeks within the Citizens starting XI of an internal crisis. Yet the cracks and chinks were on public display last weekend against the European champions, Liverpool.
It wasn’t just the fact that City conceded three goals. Or that their manager was protesting incessantly on the sidelines, all composure thrown aside amidst VAR drama.
But the nature of the Reds goals – slick, quick and like a hot knife through butter – that City could not contain nor counter with their own moves.
Such was the relentlessness of Jurgen Klopp’s attacking trio, including how well they returned into defensive formations, that there was very little space for the likes of Raheem Sterling and Bernardo Silva to dazzle us with their magic.
Of course, the makeshift defence, devoid of Aymeric Laporte and Oleksandr Zinchenko, aided. But just like the Merseysiders, Chelsea will too have realised City’s Achilles heel: counterattacking.
The kind that the Blues themselves displayed perfectly against Crystal Palace last weekend when they racked up their sixth consecutive Premier League win for the first time since their title-winning season of 2016-17.
Indeed, the likes of Willian and Tammy Abraham were prolific down the flanks and carved holes through the Eagles defence akin to that of Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane last weekend.
Abraham’s first goal, as such, was deserved. And Christian Pulisic wasn’t too far behind with a close-range header to bag the three points for the Blues.
It’s the kind of performance that would have been few and far in between under Maurizio Sarri, even with Eden Hazard in the squad.
But if there’s anything that Pep and his men should be wary of, our Manchester City vs Chelsea predictions wager it’ll be the aforementioned trio: Pulisic, Willian, Abraham – three players in a rich vein of form.
Add in Mason Mount and Jorginho into the equation and there is much for the hosts to ponder if they are to avoid defeat this Saturday.
Yet, all the evidence suggests they won’t be the ones celebrating victory come the final whistle.
Manchester City vs Chelsea Head To Head
Sure, the Blues have only won once in the last six fixtures against this weekend’s opponents.
Whether it’s losing on penalties in the League Cup or a harrowing 6-0 defeat in the midst of a crumbling Maurizio Sarri era, Guardiola and co have had the bit between their teeth on home turf.
And yet with a questionable defence on show, our Manchester City vs Chelsea predictions are expecting the tables to be turned.
Indeed, much like the 2-0 defeat the visitors inflicted on Pep and his men in 2018 when a similar defensive crisis was unfolding at the Etihad.
It seems as if a repeat of that performance could be on the cards this Saturday.

As for that aforementioned defensive crisis, the absence of Laporte and Zinchenko have contributed to that.
And while the return of John Stones and Nikolas Otamendi have somewhat shored things up, the former is subject to bouts of lapses in concentration and the latter prone to going to ground without hesitation.
The disjointed back four were exposed in all their incompetence against a blistering Liverpool attack last weekend. With Chelsea’s front three in similar form, there’s very little to suggest that they won’t concede goals.
Meanwhile, Leroy Sane and Ederson are also noticeable additions to the injury list. True, Sane has been a long-term absentee. But Ederson is a recent inclusion, and Claudio Bravo, with the help of Kyle Walker, is having to fill in.
A round-up that our Manchester City vs Chelsea predictions wager spells trouble for Guardiola and co this weekend.
Chelsea Team News
Unfortunately, it’s not all blue skies and sunshine in South London either.
Especially so since Lampard could potentially be without his best player this weekend in Pulisic who is nursing a hip injury.
The kind which has ruled him out of recent international fixtures with the USA, though the injury is not considered to be serious.
Indeed, the 21-year-old has been in transformative form – resurgent, talismanic, and a far cry from the player who was struggling for form under Sarri.
And with five goals already notched up this season, Chelsea won’t want to be without the American this Saturday.
Aside from Pulisic, Lampard is without long-time absentees Antonio Rudiger and Ross Barkley.
Manchester City vs Chelsea Betting Tips
Even the betting tipsters are in favour of another poor performance from the Citizens on home turf, in line with our Manchester City vs Chelsea predictions.
Wagering as a 41/100 pick, there is very little that appeals with those kinds of odds.
A draw meanwhile, well, the chances of the points being shared are much more worthwhile to punt on, operating as a 39/10 tip in our Manchester City vs Chelsea match bets.
The visitors also could have something to shout about a potential 33/5 victory.
But what is confirmed is that Guardiola is in for another tough performance at the Etihad against an in-form side.
