Newcastle United vs Arsenal Predictions
Both Newcastle United and Arsenal spent big during a transfer window in which neither was expected to do so. It’s given a fresh impetus to their respective seasons; huge potential for both to improve on lacklustre 2018/19 campaigns.
Rafa Benitez worked miracles to keep the Magpies in the top flight. They struggled in front of goal with only four teams scoring fewer times; three of them were relegated.
The arrival of Joelinton is expected to solve that problem. However, his stats dampen that fervour. At Hoffenheim and Rapid Vienna, he managed a goal every three games at best.
That isn’t the prolific record a Gallowgate End brought up on Alan Shearer, Rio Ferdinand, Supermac and Wor Jackie demand. The Brazilian, a £40m capture, must work hard to impress them.
So too Allan Saint-Maxim. The £20m-rated right-winger is vying with Matt Ritchie for a place in the side although Ayoze Perez’s departure opens a more advanced opportunity for the Frenchman.
Wherever Bruce uses him, Newcastle have a problem in front of goal. Perez went to Leicester and Salomon Rondon returned to West Brom briefly before heading to China.
The bright spot is Miguel Almiron. His debut Premier League season was unassuming; now, bedded into the club and English game, is the time for him to shine, to live up to the hype. He awaits his first Newcastle goal; St James’ Park will erupt when that happens.
A new day, a new season; why not?
Well, Arsenal strengthened their defence for starters. David Luiz from Chelsea and Kieran Tierney from Celtic capped off a good transfer window for the North London club which changed the outlook of our Newcastle United vs Arsenal predictions.
The star attraction, of course, was Nicolas Pepe. His £72m fee shattered the club record and now he must deliver. One of Europe’s hottest talents, his pace is a dangerous asset for a team which loves to play on the break
Pepe knows where the goal is and combined with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Arsenal has a fearsome counter-attacking unit. Newcastle conceded fewer goals than the Gunners last season but this duo will provide a stern test.
Defensively weak last time around, Arsenal showed what they were capable of in the first half of their recent friendly in Barcelona. The well-drilled back four and midfield comfortably kept the Catalans at bay.
The second forty-five minutes was the shambles we’ve come to expect. Poor positional play, no cover for anyone and treating the ball as if it contained the smallpox virus; quick to kick it into touch or to the opposition.
It was the sort of performance to welcome a Brazilian striker to the Premier League; Joelinton, if that Arsenal turns up, may become an instant Tyneside hero.
Newcastle United vs Arsenal Head to Head
The overall record is close; Arsenal lead with 77 wins to Newcastle’s 67 out of 182 meetings.
Recent years, however, are one-sided. The Magpies have one win in the last fifteen overall (D2, L12) and one in the last twelve at home (D3, L8).
We looked at both sides attacks earlier in our Newcastle United vs Arsenal predictions but goals are at a premium when the two meet at St James’ Park.
Three of the last four featured three exactly – all finishing 2 – 1 – while four of the last seven saw Newcastle failing to score and Arsenal netting once or fewer.

Also missing are Dino Mavropanos and Rob Holding, suggesting Arsenal’s strongest defence is not playing.
