Newcastle vs Sheffield United Predictions, Betting Tips And Match Preview 19/05/21

Already relegated Sheffield United travel to Newcastle for Wednesday’s 6pm Premier League kick-off.

Newcastle have struggled for consistency this season. In their last game, they were narrowly beaten 4-3 by Premier League champions Manchester City.

The Magpies were actually ahead in that game before losing it. If they come into this with the same attitude, they’ll have every chance of winning it.

Before that, Steve Bruce’s side beat Leicester City 4-2. It was a bit of a shock, as Leicester were in good form. That result shows Newcastle do have some quality in their squad.

Sheffield United’s fate may be sealed, but they have some fight in them. They went to Goodison Park on Sunday evening and came away with a 1-0 win over Everton.

Premier League debutant Daniel Jebbison scored the only goal in that game. The 17 year old certainly looks like one for the future for the Blades.

Here, we’ll preview this Premier League fixture as well as provide our predictions, the team news, our recommended bets and more…

Joe Willock has proven his worth of late…

Newcastle vs Sheffield United Predictions

Newcastle have actually been playing very well of late. Even in the games they’ve lost, they could have won on another day.

That will give them plenty of encouragement. It will infuriate Toon fans though, who will be asking where these performances have been all season.

Joe Willock and Callum Wilson appear to have found their shooting boots of late. That will be good news for Newcastle, as Sheffield United have conceded in all but one of their away games this season.

Having nothing on the line seems to suit the home side. Bruce’s men have really begun to express themselves since they confirmed their Premier League status for another season.

It could be argued that their fate already being decided will help Sheffield United, too. In games that they needed to win in order to stay in the Premier League, they were found wanting.

However, their win against Everton on Sunday was the Sheffield United of last season. They played with so much freedom that the Toffees couldn’t cope and struggled to create chances.

The Blades seemed to defend with their lives in that game. Something that has been missing in so many other games this season for Paul Heckingbottom’s side.

That win also ended an eight game losing streak on the road. Now that they’ve broken that curse, it could spur them on to get back to back away wins.

With the shackles well and truly off, anything could happen here. Newcastle have really stepped up their performances, but they will struggle if Sheffield United repeat their performance against Everton.

Daniel Jebbison made a huge impact on his first Sheffield United start…

Newcastle vs Sheffield United Head to Head

The last five competitive clashes between these sides has seen Newcastle win four. Sheffield United won the other.

That single Sheffield United win was actually the most recent meeting between these two in January. A solo strike from Billy Sharp was enough to earn the Blades all three points.

Newcastle did the double over their opponents last season. A 2-0 win in December 2019 was followed up by a 3-0 win in June 2020.

Newcastle also won the two meetings in the 09/10 Championship season. The Magpies went on to win the Championship title that season.

It’s fair to say that Newcastle have been dominant in the head to heads between these. Sheffield United might have some new found confidence, but the home side have been playing well.

Something that will hinder the Newcastle cause is the amount of first team players missing.

Ryan Fraser remains unavailable. The Scotland international has been out of action since March with a groin injury.

Defender Isaac Hayden has also been missing since March. The 26 year old is suffering from a knee injury and isn’t expected to play again this season.

Jamaal Lascelles and Callum Wilson are also on the treatment table. Lascelles has been missing since early April.

Fabian Schar is serving the final of his three game ban. The Switzerland international received a straight red card against Arsenal earlier in the month.

Sheffield United have their own list of injuries to worry about ahead of this clash.

Forward Oliver Burke limped off against Crystal Palace earlier in the month. He appears to have sustained some sort of foot injury and will miss this game.

Ethan Ampadu is also going to miss this game. The 20 year old, who is on loan from Chelsea, hasn’t played since mid-April for the Blades.

Oliver McBurnie was injured in the game against Arsenal last month. The Scot will miss the rest of this season as a result.

Defender Jack O’Connell and forward Billy Sharp complete the list of absentees for Heckingbottom’s men.

Our Newcastle vs Sheffield United predictions expect David McGoldrick to lead the line again. Teenager Jebbison could partner him up top.

Newcastle will be without main striker Callum Wilson…

Newcastle vs Sheffield United Betting Tips

Given Sheffield United’s disappointing away form, it’s not surprising that Newcastle are the 8/11 favourites in our Newcastle v Sheffield United match bets.

The Blades are the 10/3 outsiders to win in 90 minutes. It’s unlikely, but if you think their recent win over Everton will inspire them, it could represent good value.

If you think having nothing to play for will result in a tight game, the draw is 14/5. It’s worth noting, though, that Sheffield United’s last draw was in December 2020.

The highest finish Newcastle can hope for is 13th, however they’d need a lot of results to go their way. They can do their bit and win as many games as possible though, and they get three more points here.

Newcastle’s home form hasn’t been great this year, but Sheffield United’s away form is worse. The home side should win this.
