Rangers vs Lyon Predictions, Betting Tips And Match Preview 16/09/21

Rangers welcome Lyon to Ibrox on Thursday night in the Europa League group stages.

Steven Gerrard’s men are on a six-game unbeaten run that consists of five wins. Their last defeat was at the hands of Malmo when being knocked out of Champions League qualifying.

The Glasgow club currently sit top of the Scottish Premiership, three points ahead of city rivals Celtic. As well as domestic honours, they’ll have their eye on a successful European campaign.

Last season’s performance in this competition is a good yardstick for the home side to go off. Rangers reached the last 16 last campaign and that will surely be the minimum aim for them this year.

Their Champions League exit aside, Rangers have had a very good start to their season. They’ve reached the group stages of the Europa League here, and face a very tricky opening fixture.

Having finished in fourth place in France’s Ligue 1, Lyon automatically qualified for the group stages of this competition. That makes this their first competitive European fixture of the season.

They had a pretty poor start to their domestic season, failing to win any of their opening three games. They look to have turned a corner since though and have won their last two.

Peter Bosz’s side could still be suffering from a bit of early season lag as they search for their best form. The fact that Rangers have already gotten through a couple of tough games could give them the edge.

Below, we’ll preview this Europa League fixture and provide our predictions, the team news, our recommended bets and more…

Steven Gerrard will be aiming to take his Rangers side further than last season…

Rangers vs Lyon Predictions

Since losing to Malmo in their Champions League qualifier, Gerrard’s men have gone unbeaten in six. That run includes five wins and a draw in all competitions.

A 5-0 League Cup win against Dunfermline was the perfect tonic for Gerrard and his men. That was followed by 1-0 over Alashkert in the first of their Europa League qualifying final.

A 4-2 win over Ross County in the Scottish Premiership was next. After that, Rangers battled to a 0-0 draw in their second leg with Alashkert.

The blue side of Glasgow was the happiest heading into the international break. Rangers beat bitter rivals Celtic 1-0 at Ibrox thanks to Filip Helander.

Gerrard’s side picked up where they left off after the two week international break. Their 2-1 win over St. Johnstone at the weekend means they’re unbeaten since mid-August.

Lyon started their domestic campaign with a 1-1 draw at home to Brest. That was followed by a surprising 3-0 defeat away to Angers.

Next time out, they were held to a 3-3 draw against Clermont. That was after Lyon went 3-1 up at half time in the game, so that would have felt like a defeat.

Lyon got their first win of the season away at Nantes just before the international break. They picked up that form on their return too, beating Strasbourg 3-0 on Sunday.

Both teams will be confident heading into this one. Rangers may have the fitness edge, having played twice as many games as Lyon.

Lyon have some quality players in their ranks and they won’t be coming to Glasgow to make up the numbers. This is going to be a close game.

Alfredo Morelos could play a vital role for Rangers here…

Rangers vs Lyon Head to Head

These two sides have met on three previous occasions across the years.

The first meeting was back in 2007, as the two teams were drawn together in the Champions League group stages. Rangers won the first meeting 3-0 away.

Goals from Lee McCulloch, Daniel Cousin and Damarcus Beasley secured a famous victory for Rangers that day.

In a perfect reversal of fate, Lyon travelled to Ibrox for the second game and won 3-0 themselves. Sidney Govou and a Karim Benzema brace won them the game on that occasion.

The most recent meeting between these two came in July 2020 in a friendly fixture. An Ianis Hagi brace secured a 2-0 win that day. Ryan Kent was also sent off in the first half of that game.

The home side are expected to opt for the 4-3-3 formation that beat Celtic and St. Johnstone.

Jon McLaughlin returned from injury to play the full 90 minutes last time out. He’s expected to maintain the number on spot here for the hosts.

Filip Helander and Connor Goldson will partner one another in the centre of defence. Borna Barisic and Leon Balogun will occupy the full back roles.

Steven Davis will anchor the centre of midfield. He will be joined by Glen Kamara and Joe Aribo in the middle of the park.

Star striker Alfredo Morelos is expected to lead the attacking line for Rangers here. Ryan Kent and Kemar Roofe will complete the attack for the home side.

Chelsea loanee Emerson could feature for Lyon…

After a convincing win on the weekend, Peter Bosz is expected to start with the same XI here. That will see Anthony Lopes retain his position in the Lyon goal.

Our Rangers v Lyon predictions expect Sinaly Diomande and Jason Denayer to start in defence. Chelsea loanee Emerson is also expected to start, as is Malo Gusto.

Bruno Guimaraes and Thiago Mendes will anchor the midfield five for the visitors. Karl Ekambi and new signing Xherdan Shaqiri will join Houssem Aouar in the attacking midfield roles.

Moussa Dembele, who’s scored four in his last three games, is expected to lead the attacking line. Leo Dubois is the only noticeable absence for Lyon, he remains injured after missing the weekend’s league game.

Rangers vs Lyon Betting Tips

The home side are not fancied to win this going off the match odds. Gerrard’s men are the 17/10 outsiders in our Rangers v Lyon match bets

It’s expected to be a tight game and could become a tactical affair at Ibrox. If you think it will end all square, you can back the draw at 23/10.

Lyon are the favourites to win this game in 90 minutes. Peter Bosz’s side are priced up at 6/4, which could be tempting if you think the visitors will win.

The guests do have some quality players in their team and are obviously a threat. We’re expecting Ibrox to be absolutely bouncing for this game and it could carry the home side to victory.
