Already relegated Fulham travel to Southampton for Saturday’s 3pm Premier League kick off. The West London club’s fate was sealed following their 2-0 defeat to Burnley last week.
With their Premier League status retained for at least another season, Southampton have nothing to play for in this. The best finish they can muster this season is probably 12th place.
The game is a dead rubber, but Fulham are playing for pride now. Southampton’s form has been nothing short of woeful of late and the visitors will try to take advantage.
The Saints did win their last game, however. Goals from Danny Ings and Che Adams secured a comfortable 3-1 win over Crystal Palace on Tuesday.
That took them to within one point of Palace and a win here would see them leapfrog them into 13th.
Fulham manager Scott Parker will have to try and get his players up for this, but it will be tough. They’ll likely want to avoid defeat, which could result in a tight game.
Below you’ll find our preview of this Premier League fixture and find out our predictions, team news, recommended bets and more…
Southampton vs Fulham Predictions
Before their win over Palace on Tuesday night, the Saints had gone five games without a win.
The 3-0 loss to West Brom was the most alarming. At that point, it was possible for Southampton to be dragged into the relegation battle.
They had a very tough run after that game, losing to Leicester in the FA Cup, Tottenham and Liverpool. They showed some fight to draw 1-1 with Leicester in the Premier League though.
Their win on Tuesday night was enough to ensure there was no way they could be relegated. It also likely saved Ralph Hasenhuttl’s job.
Scott Parker’s future is by no means certain at Fulham. Having been relegated, there’s every chance he could get the chop. However, the owners have shown him plenty of loyalty so far and he may be given a chance to get them back up.
As bad as Southampton’s recent form has been, Fulham’s has been worse. The Cottagers come into this having won just one of their last ten games.
Amazingly, almost all of their wins this season have come against teams from the top half. If that statistic is anything to go by, they could struggle here.
However, in their last six defeats, they’ve conceded 13 goals. In those six games, they only managed to find the net themselves on two occasions.
Both teams like to play possessive football, so something’s got to give. Read on for our Southampton v Fulham predictions.
Southampton vs Fulham Head to Head
The last five meetings between these two clubs has seen Southampton win three and Fulham one. The most recent match up between these ended in a draw.
That game was a goalless draw back in December. But Southampton had two goals disallowed by VAR. The Saints really should have won it.
Before that, Southampton beat Fulham 1-0 in the EFL Cup in August 2019. The clash back in February 2019 ended with Saints running out 2-0 winners.
Fulham’s only win in the last five meetings between these was in November 2018. Goals from Aleksandar Mitrovic and Andre Schurrle secured a 3-2 win for the Cottagers that time.
It’s fair to say that Southampton hold the edge in the head to head records. But with nothing on the line for both clubs, can Fulham grab a win?
Southampton Team News – W L D L L
Hasenhuttl almost has a fully fit Saints squad at his disposal for this one.
Left back Ryan Bertrand is still out of action for Southampton. The former Chelsea man was brought off late against Leicester in April and hasn’t played since.
The other major miss for the hosts will be Oriol Romeu. The midfielder, who is a key player in the team, has been missing since February.
He’s on his way back to fitness, but it’s highly unlikely he’ll be risked for this game, given that there’s nothing on the line.
Striker Danny Ings will be full of confidence after his brace on Tuesday night. Our Southampton v Fulham predictions expect him to lead the line again, along with Che Adams.
Fulham Team News – L L D L L
Dutch defender Terence Kongolo will likely miss the remainder of the season with a knee injury. The 27 year old hasn’t featured much for the London club this season though, so won’t be a huge miss.
Fulham could be without two first team starters in this one. Tom Cairney has been out since December, but there’s serious doubts over whether he’ll be ready to play again this season.
Harrison Reed is in a race to be fit for this game. The 26 year old midfielder missed Fulham’s previous two games with a knock.
Scott Parker will more or less have his full squad available for this. However that has been the case for most of this season and they’ve still struggled.
Southampton vs Fulham Betting Tips
With Southampton’s dominance in the recent head to heads, it’s no surprise to see them 1/1 favourites to win in our Southampton v Fulham match bets.
The traders don’t seem to give the visitors much of a chance. Fulham are 13/5 outsider to win the game in 90 minutes. Understandable, considering their form.
If you think this dead rubber will result in honours even, you can back the draw at 5/2. Given the circumstance, that could be good value.
There are financial incentives to finishing as high as possible in the Premier League. That could be something that Southampton uses as motivation for this game.
Given Fulham’s awful run of form, it’s hard to see past the Saints winning this one.
