Southampton vs Leeds Predictions, Betting Tips And Match Preview 16/10/21

Southampton welcome Leeds to St. Mary’s in the Premier League on Saturday at 3pm.

Saints currently sit just one point above the relegation zone after seven games. The hosts are yet to win a single game so far this season.

Leeds haven’t fared much better themselves. They sit just a single point in front of Southampton. They have, however, won a game this season, albeit just the one.

The international break will have given both clubs the chance to regroup. They will both be aiming to get as many points as possible in the run up to Christmas.

There are genuine relegation concerns for Southampton this season. While Leeds haven’t started very well, they have far too much quality in the squad to go down.

A defeat for Saints could put them into the drop zone, if other results go against them. They’ll be desperate to avoid that, but face a tough task taming this Leeds side.

The visitors will feel the international break came at the wrong time for them. They secured their first three points of the season with a 1-0 win over Watford before the interlude.

For the Saints, the break will have given Ralph Hassenhuttl a chance to make some changes. They’ve had some good draws, but seem unable to secure a league win.

The defence will be what is most concerning for the home side. They’ve conceded six goals in their last three games in all competitions. It will be interesting to see how they deal with an attacking Leeds side.

Below, we’ll preview this Premier League fixture and provide our predictions, the team news, our recommended bets and more…

Ralph Hassenhuttl is yet to see his Southampton team win in the league this season…

Southampton vs Leeds Predictions

This could be a very tight game. Southampton have managed to grind out goalless draws against Manchester City and West Ham already this season.

However, we know this Leeds side love to attack and, in doing so, they leave themselves open. Southampton aren’t exactly free scoring, but they should get some chances in this game.

Leeds have conceded 14 goals so far this Premier League campaign, an average of two per game. Meanwhile, the Saints have only scored five goals in their seven league games

Southampton can dig their heels in when they need to, as they’ve already proven. That will make things difficult for Leeds, who tend to prefer to hit teams on the counter.

Something that Marcelo Bielsa’s men have certainly struggled with this year is having the ball for extended periods. It’s much harder to find the space in behind that way and that could play into Southampton’s hands.

Hasenhuttl’s game plan may be to allow Leeds to dominate possession and try to hit them on the break. They could use set pieces to their advantage, although they are without set piece expert James Ward-Prowse for this.

Raphinha has been Leeds’ top man so far this season. He’s the club’s leading goalscorer in the league with three. The Brazilian can provide that creative spark needed to break Southampton’s backline down.

Southampton’s front line hasn’t been firing so far this season. New striker Adam Armstrong only has a single goal to his name, and that came in the very first game.

Leeds should have too much for Southampton, but if they have an off day, the Saints could nick it.

Read on for our Southampton v Leeds predictions and best bets.

Patrick Bamford is a doubt for Leeds for this game…

Southampton vs Leeds Head to Head

These two teams have met on plenty of occasions in the past. However, other than the two meetings last season, the others have come in 2012 or earlier. So, we’ll focus on last season’s meetings here.

In doing so, it does not make great reading for Southampton fans. Leeds won the first meeting at Elland Road in February 3-0. Patrick Bamford, Raphinha and Stuart Dallas were all on the scoresheet that day.

The second and most recent meeting was at St. Mary’s in May. Patrick Bamford was on target again and his strike was added to late on by Tyler Roberts. That secured a 2-0 win for the whites.

That means, in the recent head to heads, Southampton haven’t managed to score a single goal. Add to that their problems finding the net this season and this could spell trouble for the hosts.

The record will provide Leeds with plenty of confidence however. Patrick Bamford will fancy his chances of adding to his tally, if he plays.

Southampton Team News – L L D D D

The Saints have some big players missing for this game. Che Adams was brought off on international duty for Scotland on the weekend. He may not be fit in time for this.

Jack Stephens remains out for the home side with injury, but the big miss will be James Ward-Prowse. The midfielder is banned after receiving a red card in the defeat to Chelsea before the international break.

He’s Southampton’s top scorer so far this season and is their main set piece taker. They look set to struggle in midfield without their main man.

Alex McCarthy will start in goal for the hosts. He’ll have Livramento, Bednarek, Salisu and Walker-Peters in front of him.

Oriol Romeu will hold the midfield, with Djenepo expected to come in to replace Ward-Prowse. Theo Walcott and Nathan Tella are expected to start on the wings.

The front two is likely to be Adam Armstrong and Nathan Redmond. Shane Long is also an option if Saints would prefer to use his pace up top.

James Ward-Prowse will miss the game through suspension…

The visitors have some injury concerns of their own heading into this. Luke Ayling and Robin Koch remain out and won’t be fit in time to start here.

Patrick Bamford is a doubt after missing Leeds’ last two games. The striker also missed the international break, along with Kalvin Phillips. The latter was called up, but later dropped out with his injury.

Our Southampton v Leeds predictions expect Meslier to start the game in goal for the away side here. Liam Cooper and Diego Llorente will partner each other in the centre of defence for Leeds.

Junior Firpo is expected to start at left back. Jamie Shackleton will likely keep his place at right back deputising for the injured Ayling.

Pascal Struijk will likely come into the team if Phillips misses out. He will be joined by Klich and Dallas in the heart of the midfield.

Daniel James will start on the left side for Leeds. Raphinha will play on the right side, as long as he gets back in time after international duty with Brazil.

Rodrigo will lead the attacking line if Bamford isn’t declared fit in time for this game.

Southampton vs Leeds Betting Tips

Despite Southampton being winless in the league so far, they’re actually the favourites to win this game. The hosts are priced up at 13/10 in our Southampton v Leeds match bets

There hasn’t been a draw between these two teams since 2003. The draw doesn’t look entirely likely, but you can back it at 5/2.

Leeds could represent some value as the outsiders here. A lot of this will depend on whether Bamford and Raphinha feature, in which case the odds could drop. At the time of writing, Leeds are priced at 19/10.

Southampton will make themself hard to beat, but Leeds could have what it takes to break through. We think the visitors are great value for the three points.
