Football doesn’t get better than the Champions League.
Everything about it is iconic, the lights, the music and, of course, the world class players.
We have seen some incredible moments since the European Cup turned into the Champions League in 1992. And some unbelievable goals too.
Here, we believe, are the top 10 Champions League goals in the competitions history.
10.) Peter Crouch vs Galatasaray (2006)
Some might disagree and think that the six foot, seven inch striker shouldn’t be capable of such a sublime overhead kick like the one he produced against the Turks in 2006. Well, the evidence suggests otherwise.
And we’re certainly not gonna rule out this beauty just because Crouchy’s long legs don’t look suited to the work.
No, a great player scores a great goal in a great competition on a great night. That is all.
9.) Arjen Robben vs Manchester United (2010)
Who can forget about this beauty from 2010.
Franck Ribéry floats a corner kick into the little Dutchman who hit a ridiculously sweet volley straight into the bottom corner at Old Trafford.
Robben’s connection made it look easy as Bayern fought back from three goals down against Manchester United to lose 3-2 on the night but still progress to the semi-finals on the away goals rule.
8.) George Weah vs Bayern Munich (1994)
The first African superstar and a guy who would scoop the Ballon d’Or the following year after the completion of a big money move to AC Milan.
Here he is though in his Paris Saint Germain days. The stepover and fine finish against Bayern showed the kind of skills that made him such a star of European football in the mid 90s.
Weah would even finish the 1993/94 season as top scorer in the UEFA Champions League with seven goals and this incredible solo goal for PSG was merely a taster.
7.) Claudio Lopez vs PSV (1999)
In 1999, Valencia’s Claudio ‘Piojo’ Lopez hit this amazing volley that would go on to win Champions League goal of the season.
López scored this incredible first-touch finish with his left foot as Valencia beat in the Champions League group stage.
The move starts simply enough. Just a simple floated ball into the box and the Argentinian hit a ball on the volley over his shoulder and reversed it into the net.
5.) Ronaldinho vs Chelsea (2005)
By far the best toe punt on the list. Well, the only one actually but when a hit is this good, is doesn’t matter which part of your foot does the damage.
And when a player can do what Ronaldinho can do, you know that his effort was no fluke.
It may not have done Barca any good in the long run as it was the Londoners went through, but the game belonged to Ronaldinho purely based of this utterly outrageous second goal.
The Brazilian looked to have nowhere to turn on the edge of the box before shimmering into enough space to poke the ball into the corner to leave Petr Cech floored.
4.) Gareth Bale vs Liverpool (2018)
The goal that deserved to win the final.
The 2018 final in Athens and Liverpool keeper Loris Karius fumbled two of Madrid’s three over the line but there was nothing he could do about the middle hit.
It’s 1-1 in the Champions League final and Real Madrid’s Welsh star has just been substituted in to play.
The €100 million man then produced an incredible overhead kick to put the Spaniards 2-1 ahead.
Liverpool never recovered and Madrid secured Champions League number 13.
3.) Dejan Stankovic vs Schalke 04 (2011)
One of the greatest goals in Inter’s history was hit in 2011 as, with seconds on the clock, a miraculous right-footed volley from the halfway line beat Manuel Neuer’s headed clearance.
A rare occasion when the legendary German sweeper keeper got caught out for playing his natural game.
What Neuer hadn’t reckoned on was Dejan Stankovic adjusting his body and hitting an unbelievable first time volley which didn’t even touch the ground.
2.) Cristiano Ronaldo vs Juventus (2018)
Against the side he later joined, Cristiano Ronaldo scored his best ever Champions League goal. And for a man with a back catalogue such as his, that really is saying something.
Ronaldo’s second goal for Real Madrid in their 3-0 Champions League quarter-final first-leg victory at Juventus was one of the truly great strikes.
The 33-year-old star produced an amazing unnaturally high acrobatic overhead bicycle kick that fired into the corner of the net against Gigi Buffon.
The Portuguese himself has labelled this 2018 effort as the best goal of his career.
2.) Zinedine Zidane vs Bayer Leverkusen (2002)
Like Bale’s, this moment of magic also came in the final.
That though is not the reason it takes the number two slot on this list. You can take that fact out of the equation and Zidane’s incredible left foot volley still deserves to be near the top.
For some, it might even have made number one.
On the night against Leverkusen in Glasgow back in 2002, Roberto Carlos’ cross from the left found the Frenchman who angled himself perfectly swivelled and volleyed the ball past Hans-Jorg Butt to put Real 2-1 ahead in match that would eventually win Los Blancos their ninth European Cup.
Lionel Messi Vs Real Madrid (2011)
The first-leg of an El Clásico semi final at the Bernabeu saw Messi produce one his finest ever moments which, for this guy, is really saying something.
Picking up the ball from Sergio Busquets, Leo set off on an amazing solo run in which he sped away from Lassana Diarra gave a swerve to both Sergio Ramos and Raul Albiol before bolting again leaving Marcelo stunned before sliding it past a helpless Iker Casillas.
Genius stuff as ever from the magical Argentinian.
