The Women’s Super League returns with a cracking London derby as West Ham United host Chelsea at the Rush Green Stadium.
Both sides come into the game on the back of strong performances in the Women’s League Cup last weekend.
Chelsea cruised to a 3 – 0 win at Crystal Palace while West Ham claimed two late goals in a 2 – 2 draw with Tottenham. The Hammers, however, succumbed 4 – 2 on penalties.
Both teams are running at par for their season’s expectations with West Ham sitting sixth, resolutely in mid-table while the Blues are second.
Their male counterparts may be Chelsea’s bogey team but West Ham Women are unlikely to be as formidable opposition.
If the Women are performing at par, see if the men are doing the same with our Complete 2019/20 Premier League Preview, Predictions and Betting Tips or are they just flattering deceive so?
West Ham Women vs Chelsea Women Predictions
Matt Beard’s team showed fantastic spirit and durability in their late fightback last weekend but the concerns of how they got themselves into dire straits will cause the West Ham boss as many headaches.
It continued his side’s appalling recent record in London derbies. The Hammers have yet to win any of these games since arriving in the top flight (D1, L5), conceding fifteen goals in the process. Bragging rights are not easy to come by in the East End.
However, last time out, West Ham proved too strong for Brighton, winning 3 – 1 on the south coast. That and two goals against Spurs gives them confidence ahead of what is a tough fortnight in the Women’s Super League. The visit of Chelsea is followed by a trip to Manchester City.
Home form is an issue for the Hammers with just a solitary win in their last seven WSL home games (L6). Goals are in relatively short supply, averaging one per game, the same number as conceded.
The visitors are the favourites in our West Ham Women vs Chelsea Women predictions and with good reason. Four wins on the bounce include a 2 – 1 victory over defending WSL champions Arsenal.
Chelsea’s season is a complete volte-face from their warm-up games. Heavy defeats to Bayern and Montepellier created an air of uncertainty over their 2019-20 campaign but Emma Hayes has the squad pulling in the right direction.
Two points behind WSL leaders Manchester City after four games (W3, D1) with two cup wins to throw into the mix. Scorelines haven’t always reflected the Blues dominance; Tottenham, for example, were fortunate to leave Stamford Bridge with a 1 – 0 defeat, likewise Crystal Palace.
There is no doubt the Hammers are in for a tough afternoon with Chelsea particularly well-motivated. Bragging rights is one thing but Arsenal Women host Manchester City Women this weekend. The Blues need three points to take full advantage of that game, whatever the outcome.
It really could be a win-win weekend for Chelsea women.
West Ham Women vs Chelsea Women Head to Head
West Ham have yet to beat Chelsea in a competitive match (D1, L2). Last season, Chelsea won 2 – 0 when they visited the Hammers but were held to a 1 – 1 draw in the return.
