Manchester United take on Swiss team Young Boys in the Champions League this Tuesday evening.
The game represents the opening fixture of the group stage of this year’s competition. United are expected to win their group, which includes Atalanta, Villareal and Young Boys.
From an objective point of view, this should be one of the easier games for the Red Devils. However, nothing is straightforward in the Champions League and it will still be a challenge.
Ole Gunnar Solsjkaer’s men have started their domestic campaign in almost perfect fashion. They’re unbeaten in their four Premier League games so far.
That run includes three wins and a draw, leaving them top of the table on goal difference. United fans will have their eyes on European success, as well as domestic, so a good start here is vital.
Young Boys have also made a decent start to their domestic campaign. The Swiss champions have only lost one of their opening five league games.
That run does include two draws though and they currently sit five points off of top spot. They are however unbeaten in each of their six Champions League games so far.
The Swiss outfit entered the qualifying rounds at the quarter-final stages. Two-legged victories against Slovan Bratislava, CFR Cluj and Ferencvaros have gotten them to the competition proper.
They now face their toughest game so far against an in-form Manchester United. To make things even more difficult, the visitors now have one Cristiano Ronaldo in their ranks.
Below, we’ll preview this Champions League fixture and provide our predictions, the team news, our recommended bets and more…
Young Boys vs Manchester United Predictions
Now that United have Ronaldo, there is an increasing pressure on them to now deliver European silverware. They can make a serious statement in this opener.
In their four competitive games to date, United have scored 11 goals. That’s almost three per game on average.
The Manchester United defence hasn’t been as in-form. The Red Devils have conceded in three of their four games so far this season. That indicates the away side may not get it all their own way here.
Young Boys have obviously gotten more game time under their belts, but their scoring record is equally impressive.
David Wagner’s side have scored 13 goals in their six Champions League qualifying fixtures. That’s an average of just over two goals per game.
The Swiss side also come into this game on the back of a confidence boosting 4-0 win at the weekend. That win came against top of the table Zurich to keep them in touching distance.
United also had their own big win over the weekend. Newcastle United were the team unfortunate enough to run into Cristiano Ronaldo on his second debut.
Inevitably, the mercurial Portuguese forward put the hosts ahead at Old Trafford. The Magpies responded in the second half, but Ronaldo was on hand again to regain the home side’s lead.
Bruno Fernandes and Jesse Lingard rounded off a resounding 4-1 win for United. That will have set them up perfectly for their trip to Switzerland here.
Anything other than a United win here will not be tolerated by the Red Devils faithful. With the pressure on, can they deliver?

Young Boys vs Manchester United Head to Head
These two clubs have only met on two previous occasions. That was back in 2018, when they were drawn together in the group stages of the Champions League.
Manchester United won the first game 3-0 courtesy of a Paul Pogba brace and an Anthony Martial strike. The reverse fixture was a much closer 1-0 win, with Marouane Fellaini scoring a very late winner.
Young Boys eventually finished last in the group, with United progressing in second place.
The two teams are quite different now than when they last met. United undoubtedly have a much more talented side now and have the potential to win this game comfortably.
All eyes will be on this game, as Ronaldo makes his second Manchester United debut in the Champions League.
Young Boys Team News – W D W W W
Wagner is expected to stick with the same 4-4-2 formation and starting XI that saw his side win at the weekend.
That will see David von Ballmoos start the game in goal for hosts. Cedric Zesiger and Sandro Lauper are expected to start ahead of him in the centre of defence.
Ulisses Garcia and Silvan Hefti are expected to occupy the full back positions. Nicolas Moumi Ngamaleu and Christian Fassnacht will start ahead of those on either wing for Young Boys.
Christopher Martins Pereira will start in the centre of midfield. He will be partnered by Michel Aebischer, who scored two and assisted on the weekend.
Jordan Siebatcheu Meschack Elia will start upfront together. The latter has had a direct goal contribution (goal or assist) in his last five consecutive games.
Manchester United Team News – W W D W W
David de Gea looks to have regained the number one spot from Dean Henderson. The Spaniard is expected to start this game for last season’s Europa League finalists.
Harry Maguire and Raphael Varane are expected to partner each other in the centre of defence. Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Luke Shaw will occupy the full back positions.
Our Young Boys v Manchester United predictions expect Nemanja Matic and Paul Pogba to anchor the midfield. That will allow Bruno Fernandes to marshall the number 10 role.
Mason Greenwood and summer signing Jadon Sancho will provide attacking support down the wings. The attack is expected to be led by none other than Cristiano Ronaldo.
United are a little light on reserve options from the bench. Marcus Rashford and Alex Telles are out, while Scott McTominay remains doubtful due to his groin injury.
Young Boys vs Manchester United Betting Tips
The home side are priced at 11/2 to win the game in our Young Boys v Manchester United match bets.
The draw is priced at 18/5, which shows how unlikely the traders feel it is to happen. However, if you think the home side can hold United, it could represent some value.
Unsurprisingly, Manchester United are the 4/9 favourites to win the game. That’s still not a bad price for a team that really should win.
It’s hard to see anything other than an away victory here. While the match bet odds aren’t the worst, we think we can find some value in the other markets.
